What Can Your Hearing Do for You?

Hearing is an essential part of human communication.

A chart showing favorite sounds

The sounds you hear can open a world of wonder. Stop and take a couple of minutes now to listen to your environment. What can you identify about your surroundings based on your hearing alone?

Sound and music share a unique quality. Sound can evoke a certain feeling or memories of a specific place in time. A specific song can remind you of an old relationship, pleasant moments from your childhood or memories of a great vacation. Even simple sounds can make you feel a certain way. Light rain falling on a tin roof, a train in the distance, a crackling fire or the sound of waves breaking on the beach.

Now try and imagine living in a silent world.

We know what your hearing can do for you. What can you do for your hearing?

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is a common occupational disease. NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time, such as noise generated in a woodworking shop.

18% of people who work a noisy job having speech-frequency hearing loss compared to 5.5% of the general population. This makes hearing loss the #1 disability in the US.

Hearing loss caused by exposure to excessively loud sounds and cannot be medically or surgically corrected. The good news is, hearing loss can be prevented.

You can protect your hearing by:

- Avoiding or limiting exposure to excessively loud sounds

- Turning down the volume of music systems

- Moving away from the source of loud sounds when possible

- Using hearing protection devices when it is not feasible to avoid exposure to loud sounds or reduce them.

What are you doing to protect your hearing? What protocols and procedures are in place to protect your team?
