Mobile Hearing Testing Services in the Pacific Northwest: What to Know
When it comes to hearing conservation, 22 of the 50 states run their own hearing conservation policies instead of the federal regulations. This makes choosing a local provider important, as often national providers overlook important details required at the state level.
State level OSHA hearing conservation regulations
Washington & Oregon are two of the states to have their own hearing conservation regulations.
1. Baseline hearing testing in Oregon
Oregon is one of the few states that do not allow a ‘mobile van exception’ for employees newly enrolled in the hearing conservation program. This means new hires should have their hearing tested within 6 months of being included.

2. Age correction in Washington & Oregon
Washington & Oregon are the only two states with special requirements around age correction. While it can be applied to the recordability of a Standard Threshold Shift, it does not remove the shift altogether.

3. Hearing test examiner requirements
Unlike most states across the US, both Washington & Oregon require that the test examiner to have certain qualifications. The hearing test should be performed by either a physician, audiologist, otolaryngologist, or CAOHC certified technician.
Environmental considerations of hearing testing
Even weather can influence a person's response when hearing testing. When temperatures are extremely high or low, mobile testing vans often are uncomfortable for the employees taking the test. This can impact their focus and responses.
