What is the true cost of disposable ear plugs?

Thalia Whitney • September 4, 2025

Hearing protection is often the 2nd largest expense in a hearing conservation program. However, it doesn’t have to be. Investing in custom may seem like a large initial outlay, but the longevity of the earplugs will outlast the price.

Cost of disposable ear plugs

Disposable ear plugs seem so inexpensive – usually less than 50 cents a pair. But employees go through multiple pairs a day (and they should!), as reusing disposable hearing protection often leads to hygiene & comfort problems.

For example, a factory with 300 employees (excluding temporary employees) may go through 600 to 1,200 pairs in a day, and sometimes more. But at an average of 20 cents a pair, that’s anywhere from $120 to $240 on earplugs per day. And multiply that for an entire year, and suddenly the team could be spending from $31,200 to $62,400 on earplugs every year.

Why Anadyne’s custom ear plugs are less expensive in the long run

1.     They’re reusable

Built from materials designed for industrial use, Anadyne’s earplugs are fitted with hygiene and durability in mind. No, they probably won’t survive if they’re run over with a forklift. Yes, they’ll still fit after years of being worn.

2.     Comfortable to wear, all shift long

One of the top reasons for not wearing hearing protection is the lack of comfort universal fit products bring. A sure way to waste money on hearing protection is to buy ones your employees won’t actually wear.

Anadyne’s custom fit hearing protection is pre-fit to the employees’ ear, ensuring that it fits correctly the first time, and is comfortable to wear for an entire shift.

Custom hearing protection: the most cost-effective ear plugs

We don’t recommend immediately ordering pairs of custom hearing protection for every employee. Instead, we’ll work with you to identify those who will benefit from custom protection the most, such as supervisors, employees with a longer tenure, etc.
